Contexto game: guess the word by meaning, not by letters

One secret word a day. Every guess comes back with a rank from 1 to 30,000 telling you how close it sits in meaning — then you spiral inward until you hit rank 1.

The board loads from the game’s own server when you press play — nothing third-party runs before that.

What Contexto Game actually is

Contexto Game is a daily word game built on top of a language model rather than a dictionary. You type any word; the game returns a single number — its rank — which is that word's position in a list of roughly 30,000 words sorted by how close each one sits in meaning to the hidden answer. Rank 1 is the answer. Rank 2 is the word that shares the most context with it. Rank 28,000 is a word that almost never appears near it in real writing.

That one number is the entire mechanic, and it is why Contexto Game plays nothing like Wordle. There are no letters to eliminate, no five-slot grid, and no limit on guesses. What you are doing instead is triangulating: each rank tells you which direction in meaning-space is warmer, and you follow the gradient in. Our complete guide to how Contexto works unpacks the ranking, the colour bands and the tip system in detail.

Contexto Game is free, there is no account, and a fresh word opens at midnight in your local time zone. If you have already finished and just want to check, the answer page carries today's solution behind a spoiler blur along with three progressive hints.

What the colours mean

  • 1 – 300 The answer's own neighbourhood. You are in the right region.
  • 301 – 1,500 Related by category rather than by closeness.
  • 1,501 + Effectively unrelated — treat the exact number as noise.

How a round of Contexto Game works

Three moves, repeated. Most players finish somewhere between twenty and sixty guesses; the record holders finish in under ten by opening with words that split the space.

  1. 01 Guess any word Every guess snaps into orbit around the hidden core. Wild opening guesses are a strategy, not a mistake — they map the space cheaply.
  2. 02 Read the distance Rank 1 to 30,000+ tells you how close in meaning you landed. Green words orbit tight, orange ones drift, red ones are out in deep space.
  3. 03 Spiral inward Use each rank to steer the next guess. When the number finally reads 1, the core ignites and the day is done.

How is the ranking actually calculated?

A language model turns every word into a vector — a list of numbers describing the contexts that word appears in. The game measures the similarity between your guess's vector and the answer's, sorts all ~30,000 candidate words by that similarity, and reports your guess's position in that sorted list. It is a ranking, not a percentage, which is why rank 300 and rank 3,000 can feel much closer together than the numbers suggest.

Why is an obviously related word ranked so far away?

The model measures how words are used, not what they mean in a dictionary. Pairs that feel connected to a human — "sun" and "moon", say — can share surprisingly little actual context in written text, so one can sit at rank 9 while the other lands past 200. Learning where your intuition and the corpus disagree is most of the skill.
